Secondary Division
Our Secondary Division includes Junior Secondary Program (Grades 6-9) and Upper Grades Program (Grades 9-12). The Junior Secondary Program is a unique, fully-project based approach to adolescent education. Students encounter engaging, interdisciplinary projects in both Chinese studies and English that challenge them to develop core thinking skills like empathy, planning, reasoning creativity and meta-cognition, all while developing a strong academic foundation that prepares them for further study. Teachers work in tight teams to design and iterate projects that make authentic connections between school and the real world. Student well-being is a key focus that unites our school community.
ABOUT THE ROLE
English classes in the Junior Secondary Program are interdisciplinary. Science, art, music and other disciplines are closely interwoven with literature studied in English. Classes are discussion-based, promoting inquiry, exploration, and presentation. We expect students to write well and frequently, and engage in independent project work. You will also:
● Collaborate intensively and daily with colleagues to design learning outcomes, monitor growth, and thoughtfully address individual student needs
● Support students as they progress on their individual English language learning journey
● Deeply connect with students, colleagues and parents to uphold a culture of welcome, safety and respect
● Invoke a robust learning atmosphere that leads students to value being at school and feel part of a rigorous and joyful learning community
● Inspire trust and confidence among parents and families
● Find ways to to improve your practice every day by collaborating with your colleagues
ABOUT YOU
● At least 3 years of experience teaching literature and literacy to non-native English speakers and a strong track record of student learning and growth
● A strong ability to develop middle grades students into passionate, curious and skillful readers and writers
● Pedagogy that engages all students in interesting, meaningful and challenging work, particularly a reading and writing workshop approach
● Profound commitment to ensuring and nurturing children’s wellbeing
● Highly effective collaborator, eager to listen deeply, contribute to a team and achieve goals together
● Dedication to learning and developing the craft of teaching
● Very resourceful and adaptive, eager to embrace constant change, growth and learning
● Bachelor’s degree; graduate degree in education or related field is ideal
● Academic-level proficiency in English
