Englishplus started as a family-owned Eikawa (English conversational school) in Nakashima, Kokura, in 2014. At the time, the owner created the company as a way to satisfy the requests of friends and acquaintances asking her to teach their kids English.
As the demand grew, so did her staff. Though few, full-time employees started appearing as soon as 2016. With staff and managerial aspects slowly falling into place, Englishplus saw opportunities rise.
A new teaching school in Adachi, Kokura, was leased until 2018, at which point the location was moved to Tobata in response to a new contract with Meiji Gakuen, a prestigious private school in Tobata ward. Indeed, from 2018, Englishplus was to manage their After School program, a place for students to go after school while their parents work. This program is still in full swing today.
From 2018, Englishplus saw a boom of activity. It would triple in size, both in students and staff, in the following two years, prompting the lease of a café nearby the main Nakashima office to promote and host special events. Unfortunately, Covid hit in 2020, creating unprecedented challenges.
Englishplus was able to hold on to the majority of its students by going fully online. Lessons would be provided via Internet for the following year, after which the governmental restrictions were alleviated, and students could slowly return to the classroom.
As per 2025, the school is still growing. Englishplus employs between two and four foreign employees and between four and six Japanese employees full time, as well as over 12 employees part-time. It holds various special events throughout the year, and is a great example of a fast-growing Eikaiwa in Kitakyushu.
