The Toucans Playgroup
Conveniently located in Tianmu, Toucan’s Playgroup is a space designed for children aged 3 to 6 to play, learn, and make friends outside the home. Learners can join for three, four, or five half-day sessions a week in our bilingual environment that welcomes children from all language backgrounds.
We do not divide our learners into single-age groups, allowing children to learn at their own pace. This multi-age setting helps improve language skills while boosting confidence and self-esteem.
Toucan’s Playgroup is a bilingual space where staff speak either Mandarin or English as their first language. We don’t separate time or space by language, using it fluidly throughout the day. Children can freely use their home language, and over time, develop bilingual or even multilingual skills. We introduce reading and writing using English phonics and Zhuyin in a literacy-rich environment.
Our curriculum is based on Scotland’s national framework, the Curriculum for Excellence. It perfectly aligns with our multi-age and dual-language approach. In the 90s, our mother started the first Toucan’s Music Group in northern Scotland. This group allowed preschool children to sing, play instruments, and develop their language skills. The original logo was hand-drawn by our father, inspired by his favorite mug featuring a toucan. We are proud to continue this beloved tradition with Toucan’s Playgroup.
