Life in Kaohsiung
The Taiwanese are friendly people and will soon welcome you to their home. You’ll find old men and women trying to strike up conversations with you in the street—in English! You will soon find your weekends consumed by invitations for dinner, trips to the mountains, and even language exchange lessons. The Taiwanese are eager to help you. All you need to do is communicate with them. Don’t hesitate to talk with the people of Taiwan because of language barriers. Learning a new language is part of the adventure.
Typical Taiwanese food is not on the top of the lists of most food critics but it is simple everyday food. It costs about NT$80 for a typical ‘lunch box’ of rice, vegetables, and your choice of pork, poultry, beef, or fish. Western standards are readily available throughout Kaohsiung such as Subway, Costco, and Starbuck’s. Convenience stores such as 7-11 exist on practically every corner, a running joke in Taiwan, where you can even pay your bills! Once you’re accustomed to Taiwan, you’ll find yourself stopping at street vendors for tea, fried chickens, and other edibles. Grocery stores exist throughout Taiwan and feature many products that you find in Western stores.
